Water Storage and Distribution


SaskWater certified operators ensure that treated water is safely stored and distributed to the end users by performing the following functions.


  • Pump Operation and Maintenance
  • Motor maintenance as per manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Storage reservoirs inspected annually including checking controls and valves
  • Monitor cathodic protection if applicable
  • Inspect distribution system, visually for major leaks, Exercise main distribution shut-off valves annually
  • Monitor chlorine residual
  • Open, exercise and flush hydrants annually: winterize hydrants each fall
  • Collect samples for bacteriological analysis and chlorine residual in accordance with Sask Environment permit
  • Calibrate remote monitoring equipment and sensors as required to ensure accuracy and functionality
  • Analyze and report chlorine residuals adjust as required
  • Check chlorine chemical feed pumps, perform calculations and evaluations and make operational adjustments
  • Analyze daily and monthly water consumption, pump running hours and chlorine use
  • Reporting to the regulator (Sask Environment)
  • Monitor vibration of pumps (predictive maintenance vibration analysis)
  • Clean storage reservoirs
  • Water main flushing – (spring or fall)
  • Test backflow devices
  • Inspect distribution system by sounding for leaks
  • Repair/replace main shut off valves as required
