Remote Monitoring
Partnering with TransGas, SaskWater uses a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to remotely monitor 37 of the corporation's owned and contracted systems across the province 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
The monitored information is fed into a remote terminal unit, which has pre-set levels to sound an alarm if one or more factors are malfunctioning. Monitored parameters can include:
- Chlorine Residual
- Turbidity (on each filter – water treatment plants only)
- Building Temperature
- Raw Water Supply Pressure
- Raw Water Supply Flow
- Distribution Pressure
- Distribution Flow
- Detention Chamber Treated Water or Raw Water storage level
- Clear Well level (Treated Water storage reservoir)
- Filter differential pressure – one set of transmitters required for each filter
- Filter discharge flow – one required for each filter
- Differential pressure across membrane (RO system)
- Power Supply
- Building Security
- Chemical feed tank levels
- Generator or backup/fire pump status
- Chemical feed pumps statuses
- Transfer pump status
- Truck fill pump status
- Clarifier drive motor status
SCADA helps SaskWater improve services and reduce costs. Operating water and wastewater systems for communities in a province the size of Saskatchewan can be challenging. SaskWater serves approximately 50,000 people in 55 communities in a province that covers 140,000 square kilometres.
By remotely monitoring SaskWater facilities, cost for travel to sites is reduced and field staff can focus more time on preventative maintenance and facility improvements, providing a higher level of service to our customers.
